The Impact of Smartphones on Everyday Society

My research topic is going to focus on the influence of smart phones, both positive and negative, on our everyday society. Smart phones have become almost a neccesity for many people, specifically since the inception of the iPhone in 2007. Since then there have been thousands of phones created with extraordinary capabilities. These devices have helped shape the world we live in today and has affected people in many ways. For example, they can be extremely useful in regard to saving time and being more efficient, however there have been many social, physical, and mental problems regarding our use of these devices. I hope to discuss both sides of the argument, and see if one side outweighs the other, or if there is a balance between the two.

  1. Hi Vincent,
I have to admit, i'm addicted to my Iphone. Not just because the product itself is amazing, but because of the fact that it gathers all the new media items i have into one small device. I can't stop touching it because it contains my Email, Facebook, Pictures, everything.
I'm sure this topic will be very interesting to write a term paper on.
    Enjoy!

  2. I hope your paper persuades me to not get an iphone because at this point in time, I can not wait to get the 5g. It just seems so attractive to have essentially ipad functions with calling and texting capabilities. Can iphones compare to television? Watching a lot of television probably causes "social, physical, and mental problems" as well.

  3. I'm very interested in hearing more about this. I always hear my mom telling me "I don't know how any relationships today last for more than a few weeks with all this texting, emailing, verbal communication, etc. No one knows the skill of verbal communication anymore." She may be right.

  4. I don't think i'll be able to go a day without my smartphone. I use it to check emails, surf the web, read assignments and etc. It's practically my mini portable computer that fits in my pocket. I can forget my wallet and keys but never my phone! As technology advances, I'm craving for an even better and more enhance smartphone every year....hence, the agony of waiting for the iphone 5. This topic for your paper will definitely be an interesting read.

  5. Hey Vincent,

I love this idea for a topic. I recently realized that if I had to name one material thing that has changed my life in the past few years, getting my first smartphone would be the thing that sticks out the most. My whole way of thinking has changed, knowing how much capability I have in my pocket.

  6. I can't wait to see what your research will be about smartphones and social problems. I have a blackberry phone myself and I can honestly admit that since I've got it, I cannot imagine my life without a smartphone! I have my tests schedule in my calendar, birthday reminders etc. I don't know how people were able to memorize all those things before smartphones were invented!

  7. This is an excellent topic to look into. I would be very interested in seeing how this plays out as I am an owner of an iPhone. Smartphones add an enormous amount of value to our lives. Just like you said, they make things more efficient and it's very helpful to look up information on your smartphone when you do not have access to a computer. I am especially interested to learn about the negative physical effects on its users.
